New York Mets Rick Rolled
April 11, 2008 — freemanxtremeThe New York Mets held a poll to vote for what song fans would like the team to play as a sing-a-long song in the 8th inning. This story was posted on digg.com and encouraged fans to click “Other” and write “Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley” Well, guess who won? On April 8th, Astley’s 80s pop hit was played through the stadiums sound system and was booed promptly.
The mets released a statement later that day. Here is an excerpt from Newsday.com’s article:
“Instead of solely using the online poll to pick a winner — a Mets spokesman points to the contest’s wording, promising online voters only that the tally would “help determine” the winner — the team now says it will pick a winner based on in-stadium reaction during the first six home games, when each of the five runners-up will play. “Never Gonna Give You Up” — a write-in selection — was the first of the songs to be played.”
This just goes to show that the internet can have quite an influence on anyone or anything. Too bad we don’t use that influence to try to build a Death Star… or to develop laser guns that we could mount on monkeys. Maybe once football season come around, we can pull one over on the Patriots. That would make me happy.
