Flyers move on in Playoffs

The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 in overtime of game seven. They move on to play the Montreal Canadians in the next round of the NHL Playoffs. Congratulations to the entire team!

New York Mets Rick Rolled

The New York Mets held a poll to vote for what song fans would like the team to play as a sing-a-long song in the 8th inning.  This story was posted on digg.com and encouraged fans to click “Other” and write “Never Gonna Give You Up – Rick Astley”  Well, guess who won?  On April 8th, Astley’s 80s pop hit was played through the stadiums sound system and was booed promptly.

The mets released a statement later that day. Here is an excerpt from Newsday.com’s article:

“Instead of solely using the online poll to pick a winner — a Mets spokesman points to the contest’s wording, promising online voters only that the tally would “help determine” the winner — the team now says it will pick a winner based on in-stadium reaction during the first six home games, when each of the five runners-up will play. “Never Gonna Give You Up” — a write-in selection — was the first of the songs to be played.”

This just goes to show that the internet can have quite an influence on anyone or anything.  Too bad we don’t use that influence to try to build a Death Star… or to develop laser guns that we could mount on monkeys.  Maybe once football season come around, we can pull one over on the Patriots.  That would make me happy.

Phillie Phanatic is No. 1 mascot in sports!

Congratulations to the Phillie Phanatic, mascot of the Philadelphia Phillies, for being the best mascot in any sport in America.

FromForbes.com

“One of the earliest baseball mascots, the Phanatic became an instant smash when it debuted for the Phillies in 1978. Leading fans from the top of the dugout, riding around on a motorbike and heckling opposing players was all new at the time, offering a sneak peak of the future. Players and purists hated it. Dodger manager Tom Lasorda got into a scuffle with the Phanatic, while broadcaster Joe Garagiola one lamented that “baseball is being invaded by the Muppets.” But it was a marketing ploy, and the time had come.”
